Любовная Песня (Love Song). For Tenor and Piano

After a poem by Nikolai Petrovich Nikolev (1758 –  1815), the first stanza of which is quoted in Gogol’s short story Diary of a Madman, with an alternated last line. In this song, I used Gogol’s alteration.

Das Hohelied

Des Weibes Leib ist ein Gedicht,
Das Gott der Herr geschrieben
Ins große Stammbuch der Natur,
Als ihn der Geist getrieben,

Ja, günstig war die Stunde ihm,
Der Gott war hochbegeistert;
Er hat den spröden, rebellischen Stoff
Ganz künstlerisch bemeistert,

Fürwahr, der Leib des Weibes ist
Das Hohelied der Lieder,
Gar wunderbare Strophen sind
Die schlanken, weißen Glieder,

O welche göttliche Idee
Ist dieser Hals, der blanke,
Worauf sich wiegt der kleine Kopf,
Der lockige Hauptgedanke!

Der Brüstchen Rosenknopfen sind
Epigrammatisch gefeilet;
Unsäglich entzückend ist die Cäsur,
Die streng den Busen teilet.

Den plastischen Schöpfer offenbart
Der Hüften Paralele;
Der Zwischensatz mit dem Feigenblatt
Ist auch eine schöne Stelle.

Das ist kein abstraktes Begriffspoem!
Das Lied hat Fleisch und Rippen;
Hat Hand und Fuß; es lacht und küßt
Mit schöngereimten Lippen.

Hier atmet wahre Poesie!
Anmut in jeder Wendung!
Und auf der Stirne trägt das Lied
Den Stempel der Vollendung.

Lobsingen will ich dir, o Herr,
Und dich im Staub anbeten!
Wir sind nur Stümper gegen dich,
Den himmlischen Poeten,
Den himmlischen Poeten.

Versenken will ich mich, o Herr,
In deines Liedes Prächten;
Ich widme seinem Studium

The Song of Songs

The body of Woman is a poem,
That God, the Lord, wrote
Into Nature’s great pedigree,
In a moment of inspiration,
In a moment of inspiration.

Yea, favorable was the hour to him,
God was highly enthusiastic;
The stubborn, rebellious material
He mastered really skillfully,
He mastered really skillfully.

Behold, the body of Woman is
The Song of Songs,
Really wonderful stanzas are
The slender, white limbs,
The slender, white limbs.

O such a divine idea
Is this neck, so white,
Whereon the small head sways,
The curly head-line of thought!

The rosebuds of the breasts are
Filed like an epigram;
Unspeakably enthralling is the caesura,
That sternly divides the bosom.

The plastic creator is revealed by
The parallel of the hips;
The parenthesis with the fig leaf
Is a beautiful place, too.

This is no abstract conceptual poem!
The song has flesh and ribs;
It has hand and foot; it laughs and kisses
With well-rhymed lips.

Real poetry is breathing here!
Grace in every turn!
And on its forehead the song bears
The stamp of perfection.

I want to sing your praise, o Lord,
And worship you in the dust!
We are no more than bunglers compared with you,
You heavenly poet,
You heavenly poet.

I want to immerse myself, o Lord,
In your song’s marvels;
To its research I dedicate
The day together with the nights,
The day together with the nights.

Yea, day and night I’m studying,
I don’t want to lose time;
My legs are getting so thin –
That’s because of all the studying.
